Re: What's on your Workbench?

One end of a pair of do-it-yourself LFA yagis. OK, so it's not really a workbench but it will have to do.

Re: WSPR 160m

Weak Signal Propagation Reporter's how do you make sure that you don't have a bad signal using wspr mode? Looking at the ALC (nil at my trx) is that enough? Listen to a second rx? 73 Hauke VK1HW Hi Hauke, I do several things to check on my WSPR signal. First, I keep control over the audio level tha...

The idea of trained monkeys must be the best I've heard so far. Not to mention the fact that we could pay them peanuts. 8)

Re: Windows 8

I have just installed the Windows 8.1 update, a 'free' download from Microsoft if you already have a licensed copy of Windows 8. Apart from the whopping 3.5GB download, there are a number of other issues. If you are a non-Metro user (in other words, if you don't like the brightly coloured blocky scr...

Next time someone operates HF on a hilltop for SOTA or somesuch, they should pack a quadcopter in order to put up an end-fed?

Did he manage to have a contact on the quad-copter mounted wire? Good effort nonetheless.

Re: Windows 8

I must agree Windows 8 out of the box is a real stinker. If I had to cope with Microsoft 'apps' getting in the way and if I had to cope with the stupid GUI I would have reverted back to XP. However, once the so-called improvements are stripped away, the Windows 8 operating system is better in many r...

Re: Windows 8

Hi Bob, I would suggest http://www.classicshell.net/ if you wish to be rid of the dreaded Metro GUI. At least 'classic shell' will allow you to operate pretty much as if you were using Windoze XP or 7 without getting rid of Metro entirely. Note I am not endorsing this software other than to say it w...

Re: How do you explain what ham radio is?

Good point Russ... I suggest you see Alan VK3DXE's comment above about trying to determine their interests and answering appropriately. In my comment I was trying to respond to the original question, which was: "How do you, briefly and succinctly, explain what amateur radio is all about to non-techn...

Re: How do you explain what ham radio is?

How about this:

"My Amateur Radio license gives me permission to design, build and operate radio equipment, including receivers, transmitters and antennas."

Re: Tower BASE Jump

No thinking required, just jump. Apart from the potential to remove oneself from the gene pool on account of gravity-induced catastrophic ground-impact, the EMR effects from nearby antennas might have the same outcome. I wonder if the manufacturers of these cameras could be sued for encouraging idio...

Re: Rubber-powered antenna hangers illegal in NSW

One wonders how the heck it is legal for a half-drunk idiot waving a loaded spearfishing gun to be walking along a pier looking menacing and for there to be no legal recourse for innocent passers-by. It happened to me (no, I was not the idiot, merely the passer-by). Obviously it would not be legal b...

Re: interference with pc speakers??

Many computer speakers may appear to be 'switched off' but in fact there is still power connected to the badly-shielded, mostly un-filtered built-in amplifiers. Probably what your neighbour was referring to was the fact that the computer was "off" which may have meant it was connected to power but n...

just pretend you are spear-fishing with your rubber-powered speargun. Ok, so you may have trouble convincing the magistrate that there are fish up in a tree. On the other hand, stranger things have been known to happen.

Re: Where are all the VK7's?

My guess would be that the VK7s are either on HF, as has been noted here already, or they are on some FM repeater or node or somesuch useless thing... a bit like the VK6 mob. How sad. Of course there are plenty of VK3s doing the same... perhaps we should add the phrase "and why aren't the VK7s on 2m...

Re: Windows 8

I have just finished a major computer overhaul, with new hardware and a new operating system. As much as I like Windows XP, I felt it was time to move with the times and use Windows 8. Windows 7 seems to be unavailable from the Microsoft website (even though they offer links to it). Besides, Windows...
