1200Bps PACKET

Postby VK4SC » Sun Jul 26, 2015 8:04 am

Hello all,
Im in the Brisbane/Gold Coast area and Ive been playing around with packet for the first time in probably 15 years :om:
I am disappointed to find only 2 digipeaters in my area (VK4RZB 144.850 & VK4RZA-3 147.600) with empty MHeard and Node lists.
No DXclusters or BBS anymore, but loads of APRS activity on 145.175.
Has packet really lost its usefulness now with the broader uptake of the internet?
Is anyone interested in playing with packet again?
Would love to hear your thoughts,

Packet was already on the wane by about 1995, having suffered from what we call 'late adoption', it was a technology that amateurs picked up far too late.

In '95 nearly all internet users could get at least 9600bps, 60% got 14.4K, 40% got 56Kbps, how could 1200bps AX.25 compete with that burdened by its retries and latency...

:D It was always going to disappear...

cheers,
Geoff

When it first took off in the early 80's is was the limit of the technology for the day.

It was always a technology looking for a home. It found that home commercially with Taxi dispatch systems (proberbly IP based now) and eventually APRS.

As amateurs we are focused on the technology itself, not the commercial implementation of that technology.
Hence we are first to use the tech, but last to find a useful purpose for it !

Thanks for the replies.
I find it a pity that packet is being left to die somewhat as i had a blast playing around years ago. Oh well
I prefer CW over SSB also. ...so maybe I'm just getting old..hi
