LoRa WAN - Testing in Amateur Bands

Postby VK2XTC » Wed Dec 19, 2018 5:25 pm

I'm wondering if LoRa WAN protocols can be used on Amateur Bands for testing purposes.

The modules seems to be fairly frequency agile and it may be possible to get them running on 70cm.

Has anyone played around with it ? Would it be legal ?

If it involves frequency hopping, no.

The ACMA considers frequency hopping breaches a number of clauses in the LCD and so it isn't permitted in the amateur service.

LoRa WAN isn't WiFi.

It's in 923Mhz ISM spectrum. It is quickly becoming the default (Internet version) of Internet of Things (IoT). Compared to Narrow Band IoT , which is the business grade version.

While the carriers are thinking 5G and Google self driving cars, LoRa is being deployed for remote sensor and simple utilities applications. You will see it strapped to telegraph poles around Sydney as it being deployed by the Universities.

The thing is it's a Bi-directional highly secure control path, and has a quite mature development path.

It works up to 10km as low power, so I was wondering how it would operate over high power and a Yagi on an Amateur band. But if is not permitted , then thats it.
