Help - Screen Layout

Postby ADMIN » Sun Jun 08, 2008 1:09 am

The VK Logger screen is divided up into modules, all updating asynchronously.
In other words, they update separately at differing time intervals, and not as one "page refresh" in days of old.

The layout and behavior of your VK Logger screen is controlled by the settings in your "User Control Panel".
Users who have signed-in can change and customise the look to suit their own preferences.

Once signed in, your VK Logger main screen -in the default "normal" display mode- will look similar to above:

Messages and SPOTs
On the left is the main message module.
This contains all the casual comments and SPOTs that have been posted.

A "SPOT" is another term for "reception report".
It is a structured method of data entry, and as such, offers more flexibilty to use and later recall that data.
Be aware that posting a reception report in a casual chat line is of extremely limited value to all concerned, and should be avoided.

You can use the comment line to your advantage, and include additional information to a SPOT, for example.
In the example below, check out the SPOT made at 10:41 by VK3OE.
Here, Andrew VK3OE, quotes a more precise frequency, and makes a useful observation about wandering:

What you see in the main message module is determined by your settings in My Settings:
Please refer to the My Settings help page for more information.

On the right, we have the Users Signed In module, and beneath that we have other modules of information, which can be expanded/contracted by clicking on the Title (look for the +/-).

Beacon SPOTs
When you correctly spot a beacon that is listed in the Beacon Database, you will automatically update the Beacon Database, and flag that entry as being "Active".
A "correct spot" means that the callsign and frequency match what is in the database.
A discrepancy of 3kHz in listed frequency is permitted, to allow for beacon drift, and differing tolerances of various receivers.
When your spot matches a Beacon Database entry, the Beacon update icon Image will be appended to your Beacon spot. This indicates that the database entry was updated successfully.

Repeater SPOTs
When you correctly spot a repeater that is listed in the Repeater Database, you will automatically update the Repeater Database, and flag that entry as being "Active".
A "correct spot" means that the callsign and frequency match what is in the database.
A discrepancy of 3kHz in listed frequency is permitted, to allow for drift, and differing tolerances of various receivers.
When your spot matches a Repeater Database entry, the Repeater update icon Image will be appended to your Repeater spot. This indicates that the database entry was updated successfully.

New functionality has been added to change from the familiar 1-line format, to a 2-line format, as demonstrated in the diagram below.

Image

In 2-line format, UTC & date, as well as your callsign & your grid will always be in a 2-line format, irrespective of whether a comment is left as well.
The resulting columns are slightly narrower.
This may help those with an old (lower resolution) screen, where the iChat etc is a squeeze.

Like all other custom settings, you set this in your User Control Panel;

Don't forget to "Save Changes" before clicking the close cross on the UCP.
