What are the most popular satellites being used in VK?

Post by VK4WDM » Mon Aug 03, 2015 7:23 am

I have two satellite-capable radios but I have never even heard a satellite much less transmitted through one. (Yes I am a 70 yr old satellite virgin  ).

What are the most popular satellites in use in VK, and is there a site similar to VK logger where I can see what the current activity is?

Wayne,

Get onto the AMSATVK group in Yahoo Groups. You will get the detail you seek from there I reckon.

Cheers.

G'day Wayne,

You're getting into Sats at the right time with quite a few new sats going active in the next 12 months (EO-79 & 80 - http://www.amsat.org/?page_id=2944 , and also the CamSats - http://amsat-uk.org/satellites/communic ... msat-xw-2/ ).

A quick reference page that shows the current status of Amateur sats is http://oscar.dcarr.org/

Off the top of my head, current active sats are;

AO-7 (linear)
FO-29 (linear)
SO-50 (FM)
AO-73 - but I think this one is only active while over the US

There are also talks of a new HEO (Highly Elliptical Orbit) sat going up in a few years which, once operational could have a footprint of ~1/3 of the earth :)

Edit: As mentioned above, just on the AMSAT Yahoo Groups, also have a look at http://amsat-uk.org/ and http://www.amsat.org/

OK, OK, I get the joke (but it did take a while). Most popular human-made satellites :D

The last satellite I used was RS-7, back in the 1980s.

I am looking forward to the eventual launching of the Phase 3E high earth orbit satellite. This will allow long-haul international satty comms again. Not holding my breath, though. This has been talked about for decades.

Maybe something to play with when the sun goes spotless again?
