ISS will be active on voice again this week

Postby vk4khz » Mon Nov 23, 2009 8:54 am

The crew of the International Space Station will be active on voice again this week as the ISS passes over NE Australia.
The lucky school selected for an ARISS scheduled voice contact is an Aussie school and transmissions will be in english;

Dumbleyung Primary School, Dumbleyung, Western Australia, Australia,
telebridge via VK4KHZ (***)
Contact is a go for: Thu 2009-11-26 11:51:21 UTC 62 deg (***)
>
The downlink frequency will be the usual 145.800FM

A slight change in time - AOS will now be 11:47:35utc.
The ISS will approach from NW heading in a SE direction and should be audible across most of the Australian East Coast on the 145.800 FM downlink frequency.
The Students of Dumbleyung are VERY excited about being given an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station contact opportunity. Many of the students may have never even heard of Amateur Radio let alone experience the thrill of speaking with an astronaut via the ham radio telebridge equipment.

Thanks for the heads-up again Shane. I will hopefully take a listen on my hand-held 4ele Yagi.

A bit of a late night for the students though? I hope the contact is a success.

Lightning/storm just moving in over QF56IF, so I hope it clears up by ISS pass time. I don't much fancy standing in the back yard with a big metallic conductor in my hand

Great copy at this end QF56IF Shane with my 4ele handheld yagi... some very fast QSB initially, but solid S9+ copy after that until the end of the contact.

Easy to determine what the student's questions were given the answers 8) I hope the full audio will appear on the WIA website in due course.

I also experienced the very deep signal fades during the initial stages of the pass but overall it was a very good contact. It is always very enjoyable to introduce our hobby to small schools such as Dumbleyung Primary School. They were VERY excited in the lead up to the contact.

Well that is it for astronaut Frank DeWinne, he is packing his bags to come home.
I am unsure if the audio will be on the WIA website but I will check. If you want a copy of the file please feel free to email me. vk4khz@bigpond.net.au

Thanks for the link... but such a shame that amateur radio (once again) fails to get a mention.

A 'phone' hook-up to the ISS?!

But from the WA to QLD it was a "phone hookup" wasn't it? If there are no hams or radios in the room it's hard for a jurno to know.

Yes, technically - but it's not like they picked up their Telstra mobile and gave the ISS a buzz... That will be the impression readers get.

What about all the hard work VK4KHZ puts in?! :D
