Re: Kenwood TS-130S Repair/Resto

I also have a TS-130S - purchased at a hamfest that is in good order but age will necessitate some replacements in time. This is the third of 130S I have owned- it was also my first & second radios I had as a novice. They were such a compact radio for the time and many an amateur started with or use...

Re: A box of hamfest freebies

You definitely can make some good finds at the later stages of hamfests, rummaging through boxes beneath a table uncovered a couple of working transistor radios recently. They were $2 or $3 each. Component cabinets can be great buys and usually contain all sorts of potential treasure

Re: 40 meter rotatable dipole questions

I'm considering 40m antenna options for the very reasons mentioned in the original post so this thread is timely. I had in mind a rotatable dipole also but delta loop also a possibility. There would be two potentially uncooperative trees for two points of the delta loop and back to a J mount on a ch...

Re: Video: Analogue panel meter basics

I watch a lot of electronics/radio you tube videos and alans are among the best, TRX bench being another. Clearly explained and well paced - enough detail, not too long I'm particularly interested in analog meters at present as I'm trying to determine if a wattmeter movement is faulty. Apart from ch...

Re: Video: Bird 43 Directional Wattmeter

There are not many economical methods to obtain very accurate peak ssb power readings - the "regular" power watt meters with peak reading function dont appear very precise.

While not exactly cheap, Bird 43 with peak kit may be a good options - well under the $500 + for the new digital ones

Re: Amateur radio - a 21st Century hobby

Just a few thoughts but I'm wondering if targeting both sons AND fathers/guardians isn't a worthwhile recruitment strategy. An interesting technical hobby that sons and fathers ( or mothers for that matter) could tackle and learn together - quite possibly from an equal footing. If a father can see v...

Re: LOTW help

I was using QRZ log book up until recently but with so few contacts being confirmed it led me to exploring other options. I don't think QRZ contacts qualify for ARRL award eQSL have the Authenticity Guaranteed system where users have provided evidence of their station identify - I think it is curren...

Re: LOTW help

The whole QSO confirmation business has become rather messy - some use LOTW, others eQSL, some both, some none. Many stations do not use bureau and will only return cards sent to them with money to cover the return card. Not real keen on this Then there is the log book software - with some uploading...

Re: Novice - Standard suffix history

The L calls for Novice class License were being issued as early as mid 1992- when I got my call. After N suffix, I recall P suffice appearing then other letters became available including L. I didn't fancy N or P suffix but wouldn't have been bothered as long as I got on air! I did request my callsi...

Re: 10m tilt-over winch-up tower

I'll be interested in how the new antenna performs when you've used it for a while.

Was this kit or homebrew?

Will the council have anything to say about the antenna exceeding 10m height or is the supporting mast only subject to the height limitation?

Great it's finally up and on air

Re: Cleaning Boat Anchor

What paint did you end up using? I have a FT-901 which I have painted with a spray can - colourbond "Windspray" But it is a little flat, dry & thin so I went over it with a couple of coats of clear. Not entirely satisfied but it is very close match just doesn't have the "thick" finish of kill rust e...

Re: YouKits FG-01 Analyser Calibration?

The appeal of these new generation is the visual representation of antenna resonance points across a range of frequencies, impedance and sharpness of the resonance. I could plot this manually by just taking readings at 25 Khz spacings I suppose but the technology is available to do this with these i...

Did the manufacturer provide any support I'm looking into analysers at present and youkits is reasonably priced and generally well reviewed. The issues above is a concern. Others Im looking at are the Rigexpert & another new offiering...
