GPS Epoch Rollover

The GPS seems to have it's very own Y2K moment coming up on Sunday as the 1024 possible week numbers exhaust. https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2019-04-05/gps-rollover-global-positioning-system-receivers-satellites/10966218 It will be interesting to see if any of my older units a) run up and b) st...

Re: VK5 Microwave Road Trip

I am not a Facebook user so I can't really comment on it's usefulness or otherwise, I find youtube as a 'learning tool' to be almost useless. The basis of my dislike is the interminable scrolling through poorly filmed, poorly narrated, poorly storybooked and poorly lit videos to find that one nugget...

Re: The WIA and Google Suite

I copied and pasted the original text. Does this work?

(It works for me but that is probably not a great test)

Re: The WIA and Google Suite

I received this from Aidan Mountford on behalf of the WIA President (I had emailed the Prez directly on this matter). I make no comment as I am yet to digest what this means: Colin, I apologise if there has been any miscommunication - I will review this communication with the IT group. With respect ...

Re: The WIA and Google Suite

Hi Lou, It seems the WIA have engaged what appears to be an external 'concierge' service to handle email comms - this suggests that their IT services are being outsourced. Thus the qualification of business use for google suite. It seems a weird choice to provide these 'services'. Maybe they are try...

The WIA and Google Suite

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from the WIA indicating that they would be moving their email redirection service to a Google service. For those who are unaware, the WIA has provided a service where members of the WIA could get a @wia.org.au email address that forwarded mail to the users a...

Re: An Unexpected Outcome of FT-8

I. Give. Up.

I tried to inject a little positivity but the nay-sayers just have to hi-jack and have a whinge about a completely different subject. No wonder potential new-comers get turned off the hobby. Mostly by old whiny men and 1930's club meeting mentalities.

Well you win.

An Unexpected Outcome of FT-8

Well despite what the haters have said, I have quite enjoyed playing around with FT-8 over the last few months. At the very least it has got me back on the air. There has been an unexpected upside. QSL Cards. Using FT-8 I have been able to make contacts into places I have never been able to before. ...

Re: Is this for real?

I am not sure what AMC's business model is. The invigilators are independent of the training organisations, and I believe (but don't know) they generally come from boating and sailing clubs, etc. so they may or may not be paid. A marine operators exam is $89 per http://www.amc.edu.au/industry/omc/om...

Re: Is this for real?

AMC and UTAS should have no difficulty delivering under the deed as they already do such work for marine radio certification. I imagine that the marine radio invigilation and certificate processing is a far larger body of work than the amateur radio equivalent. AMC have a network of providers and in...

Sun Surface Activity 2018

365 images of the sun's surface during 2018 in one animation: http://www.esa.int/spaceinimages/Images/2019/01/The_Sun_in_20182 I thought it might be of interest to some. This sequence of 365 images shows the changing activity of our Sun through the eyes of ESA’s Proba-2 satellite during 2018. The im...

Re: What has FT8 done for 6m ?

Some other thoughts. The results presented as "total failure" are simply an example of one troll's operator's confirmation bias. If you only have a hammer everything starts to look like a nail. If you hate a particular mode, any excuse to run it down is good enough. I simply don't get the hating of ...

Re: FT8 6m DX

I am not one who chases awards so that can't be it. Nor do I get excited about contesting, so cheating there isn't it. I live in a place where the background noise is usually between 7 and 9+ over pretty much the entire HF spectrum. SSB, AM and FM voice are pretty much a waste of time. I hadn't used...

Re: FT8 version 2 is coming

Bloody weather. A week or more ago I installed 2.0 and made a few contacts. Pretty much since then every afternoon or evening when I have had a chance to have a play, there has been a severe thunderstorm warning. Including right now! Oh well, I'll have to wait out the storm season - I don't know ho...

Re: FT8 version 2 is coming

Well the upgrade to Ver 2 well fine except for the SSL bit, but the manual copy worked. The upgrade of JTAlert-X was more problematic. My current PC is running Win 8 (long story about a legacy application) and the new .NET runtime isn't supported on Win 8. }:[ So I am on the horns of a dilem...

Re: FT8 version 2 is coming

It is free.

It is not hard.

Why on earth would you not just upgrade?

I had an issue with the SSL but the manual instructions got it going. So read the release notes and guides. We are supposed to be intelligent technical folk, so it ain't that hard.

Re: FT8 version 2 is coming

From the release notes:

"7. The UDP messages sent to companion programs have been expanded and
improved."

I wonder whether the 'companion' programs will also need to be updated. It would seem logical.
